CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their season opener Saturday 75-58 against Big 12 foe Missouri (2-0) Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders were powered by three newcomers in double figure scoring. Junior Verne'qua Taylor led Texas A&M - Corpus Christi with 12 points in 38 minutes of play while freshman Trish Amboree chipped in 11 points and sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks added 10. Junior Jessica Jammer added six points and led the Islanders on the glass with eight rebounds.
Seniors Christine Flores and BreAnna Brock had standout games for the Tigers. Flores posted 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Brock chipped in 23 points and 17 boards. The Tigers hit nine three pointers in the game, including three apiece from Flores and Brock.
Early on the two teams went back-and-forth, but Amboree's first three-pointer in her college debut gave the Islanders their first lead of the game at 16:27. But the Tigers went on a 7-0 run starting with a lay-up by Brock and five points from Flores to build a 21-13 lead with 7:03 to play.
Amboree stopped the run with a triple, and a Myles free throw made it 21-16, but the Tigers were able to build the lead on their inside game once more. Amboree answered again with another three with 5:19 to play to bring the Islanders within four points. The two teams continued to go blow-for-blow, but Fowler delivered a crucial blow, hitting a three to end the first half to give her team a 37-29 lead.
Out of the half, Myles hit a layup at the 19:49 mark and Taylor hit a jumper to get the Islanders within four at 37-33. But the Tigers answered by going on an 18-0 run to extend the lead to 55-33 with 14:04 to play.
The Islanders responded by going on a 6-0 run, led by a Jammer jumper with 10:58 left with the Islanders trailing 58-37. The Islanders continued to rally, and back-to back threes by Amboree and Anderson Sparks put the Islanders within 14 with 7:42 to play before Priede hit a three for the Tigers with five minutes left to extend the Tigers lead to 71-53.
