Islanders fall to Roadrunners in Southland Conference road game

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team lost its first Southland Conference road game of the year by a 69-44 to the UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday night.

The Islanders move to 2-13 on the year with a 0-2 record in Southland Conference play. UTSA improved to 5-10 on the season, 1-1 in league play.

Ashley Darley led her team with 13 points on the night, her fifth double-digit scoring game of the year and second in-a-row, while Zoey Vega-Vega was tops in rebounds with 10, her third double-digit performance on the season on the boards.

In the first half, the Islanders opened the scoring on a jumper from Darley and a free throw by Adrienne Scott to take a 3-0 advantage before a UTSA three pointer knotted the score at 3-3 less than two minutes into the game. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi briefly regained the lead before the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie with 11 minutes left in the first half.

With the score at 13-12, the Roadrunners scored 10-straight points to take a 23-12 lead and forcing the Islanders to call a timeout. Jessica Jammer ended the scoreless streak with a free throw at the 6:10 mark to make it a 10-point game. The lead reached as many as 13 at 26-13 before a 5-0 run by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cut it to single digits at 26-18. A 6-0 run by UTSA over the final 3:21 pushed the advantage to its largest of the night for a 32-19 lead at halftime.

Scott led the team in both points and rebounds at the break, scoring eight and pulling down six boards. Vega-Vega was the second-leading scorer with four points while Jammer went into the break with five rebounds, good for second on the team.

The Islanders were unable to get back into the game in the second half, falling behind by 55-30 as UTSA was able to extend its lead. The Islanders were only able to get within 65-44 with 2:56 left in the contest before the Roadrunners scored the final four points to take a 69-44 final.

Scott finished second in scoring for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi with eight points while tying for second in rebounds with Darley and Jammer at seven on the night.

Next up for the Islanders will be a Saturday game on the road at Southeastern Louisiana. The team will travel to Hammond for a 3 p.m. matchup against the Lady Lions. Yannis Koutroupis will call the action on
