Islanders down Utah Valley 63-48 for first win of the season

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday night with a 63-48 victory of the Utah Valley Wolverines at the Lady Griz Holiday Classic on the campus of Montana.

The Islanders move to 1-11 on the year while the Wolverines fall to 1-12. Adrienne Scott led the team to victory with a career-high five blocks to go along with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Jessica Jammer led the team with 13 points on the night while three other players, Breann McMillan, Lauren Smith and Taryn Gregory, each scored 10 points in the contest. For her efforts in the two games, Scott was named to the all-tournament team.

In the opening half, the Islanders fell behind 2-0 after a pair of UVU free throws to open the game but quickly grabbed the lead following a McMillan three-point shot. After a Wolverines jumper to take the lead, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi would never trail again as McMillan hit another three to give the Islanders an 8-6 advantage. After being tied at 8-8, a pair of Scott free throws gave the team a lead it would never relinquish, stretching it to as many as 19 on an Ashley Darley three pointer with exactly five minutes left in the opening half before taking a 40-24 advantage into the break.

McMillan bested her career-high six points, all in the first 15 minutes of the game, and scored a total of 10 points in the period to lead the team. Jammer came off the bench to score nine points while Scott followed with seven points and three blocks in the first half. The Islanders extended their lead throughout the half despite being outrebounded 26-19 by committing just one turnover while forcing 12 by the Wolverines.

In the second half, the Wolverines went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to just 10 points, but were never able to get any closer as Texas A&M - Corpus Christi stopped the rally with an 11-1 run to make it a 21-point advantage at 54-33 with 8:33 left in the game. The biggest lead of the night came at 63-42 on a jumper from Jammer with 3:50 left to go. The Islanders held off an attempted rally to take a63-46 final.

Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be a Jan. 5 game against Texas - Pan American. The Lady Broncs took a 70-57 win over the Islanders on Nov. 20 in Edinburg.
