Jade Davis named First-Team All-Southland, Islanders women's basketball team picked second in West Division
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball player Jade Davis was named preseason First-Team All-Southland on Wednesday by a vote of the league's coaches. While Davis received the individual honor, the Islanders were picked to finish second in the West Division of the Southland Conference by both the coaches and the Sports Information Directors.
Davis, a senior that has led the team in scoring the past two seasons, received the automatic selection after being named to the first team following her junior campaign. She scored 15 points per game last year to finish fifth in scoring among conference players. In addition to the regular-season all-conference team, Davis was also named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament team after averaging 16 a game to help the Islanders make a deep postseason run.
After finishing last season tied for third in the regular season standings and making it to the Southland Conference Tournament Finals, the women's team is predicted to finish second in the tough West Division of the league. After coming up short in the finals to regular-season champion Lamar, the team advanced all the way to the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational and won a school-record 24 games. The Islanders received four first-place votes and 47 points total from the coaches while the SIDs gave them five first-place votes and a total of 46 points.
Lamar is picked to finish first in the East in both polls. They received 10 first-place votes from the coaches and eight from the SIDs. They received the top point totals of any team in the conference, amassing 60 from the coaches and 58 from the SIDs. The two groups also agreed on the West winner, tabbing UTSA to take the division during the regular season. They received four and five votes from the coaches and SIDs respectively.
The first game of the year for the Islanders team will be on Nov. 12 at the American Bank Center when they host Arkansas State. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start and will be played on the first day of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Tip-Off Tournament hosted by A&M - Corpus Christi.
