The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team found out early Monday that they would be in postseason play, now they know who they face. The Islanders will take on Cal State-Bakersfield on Wednesday night at the American Bank Center in the opening round of the Women's Basketball Invitational with tip-off set for 7 PM on Stripes Court.
TAMUCC is the No. 2 seed in the West Region of the 16-team tournament and is matched up against the No. 3 Washington vs. No. 6 Portland game. The winner of those two games will play each other in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The Islanders are 22-10 on the season and finished third in the Southland Conference while the Roadrunners finished the season with a 16-12 record.
The only common opponent between the Islanders and the Roadrunners is the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Islanders won a 96-90 overtime game against them in the second game of the season while the Runners lost an 87-79 game against the Crimson Tide during the third week of the season.
Jade Davis and Elisa Beagle will lead the Islander team looking to match the most wins in school history with 23 set during the 2004-05 season when they made an appearance in the WNIT.
That season, in the only other postseason appearance for the Islanders, they hosted a WNIT game against Fresno State in a first round and beat the Bulldogs by a 56-53 final. In the second round, TAMUCC traveled to Texas A&M where they were knocked out by a 65-59 score against the Aggies.
Davis leads TAMUCC in scoring at 14.7 points per game while Beagle leads the team at 8.6 rebounds per game. Katie Williams of CSUB leads the team at 18.3 points per game while Phynique Allen scored 16.6 points a contest for the Runners. Tamiko Davis is the top rebounder on the team at 7.8 a game.
The Islanders are one of three Southland teams in the postseason as Lamar earned a No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament and will take on No. 3 seed West Virginia and Stephen F. Austin takes on Creighton in the WNIT. It is the first time in Southland history that three member schools have participated in the postseason.
Tickets for the game will be $5. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi students attend free with their Sanddollars card. Women's basketball 2009-10 season ticketholders will have the right to purchase their same seats for $10 by contacting the Islander ticket office before noon Wednesday.
