ISLANDERS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY AGAINST CENTRAL ARKANSAS

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will open up the Southland Conference season on Stripes Court this Saturday against Central Arkansas. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM at the American Bank Center.

The Islanders come into the game with a record of 8-5 after dropping contests against TCU and Texas-Pan American to start the 2010 year. Central Arkansas is 10-3 on the season. The Islanders are 3-0 all-time against UCA since both teams joined the conference for the 2006-07 season. The last meeting was a 52-50 win for TAMUCC in Conway, Ark last season.

"Tomorrow is big for us playing at home for our first conference game of the year," said head coach Robert Robinson. "It is very important we come out and protect our home court to get off to a good start in the conference race."

Seniors Elisa Beagle and Shaye Montgomery will lead them into the game with both players on hot streaks. Beagle has had double-digit rebounds in four straight games and double-doubles in 3-of-4, including the last two contests.

Montgomery has recorded back-to-back 23 points games, setting an Islander record with seven made three pointers on Jan. 2 against TCU. She followed up that performance by making five more against UTPA this past Wednesday.

"They are seniors who understand what this time of year is about," said Robinson. "They want to get the most out of it because it is important to them.

"This is their last time out and they want to make sure they can help lead this team to a conference championship."

Megan Herbert leads the Sugar Bears and the Southland Conference in scoring and rebounding with 24.6 point and 13.9 rebounds per game. The freshman from Rogers, Ark. Has quickly become the top player in the Southland as UCA has rolled through the pre-conference schedule.

"Meagan plays the four and the five so Elisa, Adrienne and Myeisha will all have to guard her," said Robinson. "She likes to draw fouls so the key for us to not put her on the free throw line."

Yannis Koutroupis will call all the action from Stripes Court on ESPN 1230 AM as the Islanders look to take down the Sugar Bears. Live stats and live video will also be available through www.GoIslanders.com.
