ISLANDERS FALL TO MCNEESE IN SLC ROAD GAME
Lake Charles, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team dropped a 68-54 decision in a Southland Conference road game at McNeese State on Saturday afternoon.
The Islanders fall to 10-15 overall, 5-7 in SLC games while the Cowgirls moved to 12-13 overall and 4-8 in SLC play. Shaye Montgomery did her best to keep the Islanders in the game, accounting for nearly half the Islander scoring while putting in a career-high 26 points.
The Islanders started the game off with a 5-0 run on a layup by Myeisha Myles followed by a Jade Davis three-pointer. McNeese scored the next five points to knot the game at 5-5 with 15 minutes left in the first half. McNeese took a small lead at 6-5 before Montgomery hit a three-pointer to put the Islanders ahead once again.
The two teams battled back-and-forth the rest of the half, with the largest lead being seven points by McNeese 22-15 with 3:57 left in the period. Montgomery hit four-straight free throws to go into halftime down only three at 22-19.
In the second half, the Islanders were unable to keep it close. Adrienne Scott scored a basket to get the Islanders within 24-21, but it was the closest they would get the rest of the way. With the score 30-24, McNeese scored 17-straight points to open the lead to 23 at 47-24.
The Islanders kept fighting, closing the gap to eight points at 57-49 with 3:09 left to go, but were unable to chip away any further, falling by a final of 68-54.
Montgomery's 26 points led all scorers while Myles had led the team in rebounding with a game-high 11 rebounds. Scott added 11 points as the only other Islander to score in double figures. Shante' Perry led McNeese in scoring with 19 points.
The Islanders return home to play Southeastern La. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the American Bank Center. Game time is set for 7 PM.
