AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Longhorns scored three runs in the opening frame and five runs in the third to pick up an 8-0 victory tonight over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team. The Longhorns outhit the Islanders 11-2 in five innings at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Brejae Washington and Tiarra Davis both went 2-for-2 to lead Texas (20-15) while seven other Longhorns tallied a hit in the win.
Texas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four hits. Washington hit a leadoff bunt single before stealing second. Lindsey Stephens then drilled a RBI double down the right field line to plate Washington and put the Longhorns up 1-0. Stephens then scored on a RBI single by Davis before Holly Kern ripped a two-out RBI single to center field to score Taylor Thom, who reached on a walk.
The Longhorns extended their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the third with five runs on six hits. Thom started the frame with a single to right field before scoring on a RBI double by Davis. With two outs, Texas added a pair of runs after Mandy Oagle hit a home run over the left center wall. Devon Tunning followed with a single to left center before scoring on a RBI double to left center by Stephanie Ceo. The Longhorns added their eighth run of the game after Washington hit a RBI infield single to Perez at shortstop.
Cochran tallied a leadoff infield single in the top of the first while Perez drilled a single to left center to open the top of the fourth.
Liz Carter (6-12) suffered the loss for the Islanders. The freshman allowed 11 hits and eight runs while walking two and striking out two in four innings.
Tiarra Davis (9-7) secured the win for the Longhorns. She limited the Islanders to just one hit while walking one and striking out four in three innings.
The Islanders will continue Southland Conference play when they head to Abilene, Texas, to take on first-year member Abilene Christian in a three-game series. The Islanders will face the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29, before wrapping the series on Sunday, March 30.
