Second-Inning Play Helps Lift UTSA Past Islanders,9-4


CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team outhit UTSA 9-6, but a seven-run second inning helped lift the Roadrunners to a 9-4 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Chapman Field.

The Islanders (6-18) received a hit from all nine batters in the lineup and tallied three runs in the third to pull within four but the Roadrunners maintained their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth while the Islanders added one in the sixth.

The Roadrunners (14-8) were propelled by Jolene Graham who went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day including 2 RBI. Alyssa Vordenbaum (5-3) recorded five strikeouts and allowed just two hits and one run in four innings to pick up the victory for the Roadrunners.

UTSA got on board first in the top of the seventh on three hits. After three consecutive walks by Islanders' pitcher Ashley Elicerio, Paige Hamilton reached on a fielder's choice to plate Graham before another UTSA walk loaded the bases. Victoria Birdwell followed with a RBI single to left field to plate another Roadrunner and load the bases. UTSA plated their third run of the game after Hamilton stole home. UTSA posted their fifth walk of the inning to load the bases with one out. Hayley Galloway recorded the second out of the inning with a pop fly before Courtney Buchman ripped a 3 RBI triple to right center to plate three more UTSA runs. After a Graham RBI single to shortstop gave the Roadrunners a 7-0 lead, Elicerio pulled the Islanders out of the inning with a ground out.

The Islanders got things going in the bottom of the third with five hits and three runs to pull within four. With one out, Dani Tefft singled to third base before UTSA's hurler Haylee Staton picked up her fifth strikeout of the game for the second out of the inning. The Islanders put together a rally with four straight hits to plate three runs. Galloway started things off with a single through the left side and Meagan McKinney followed suit with a single to the shortstop to load the bases. Laura Phillips then stepped to the plate and cranked a 2 RBI single to center field to plate Galloway and Tefft. With McKinney on third, Lindsey Lyles drilled a RBI single to left field to score McKinney for the Islanders' third run of the game. Valerie Perez popped out to right field to end the frame.

UTSA followed with two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth to take a 9-3. Siera Sproul doubled and Graham singled to plate a pair of Roadrunners.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored a run in the fourth on two hits. Perez jumpstarted the inning with her fourth double of the season to left field and Cassie Carroll singled to center field. A Tefft sacrifice hit plated Perez before Mickayla Cochran lined out to third base to end the frame.  

Elicerio (1-9) suffered the loss for the Islanders. She allowed six hits, nine runs, seven of them earned, while walking eight and striking out two in seven innings.

The Islanders will travel to Lake Charles, La. on March 16 and March 17, to take on McNeese State in their first conference road games of the season.
