Softball Suffers 9-1 Loss to North Texas to Conclude the CenturyLink Classic


SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team took on North Texas for the third time this season to conclude the CenturyLink Classic. The Mean Green tallied 11 hits en route to a 9-1 victory in five innings over the Islanders at Bobcat Softball Stadium.

The Islanders (5-15) who are battling some injuries mustered three hits behind Meagan McKinney, Lindsey Lyles and Michelle Sorenson. The Mean Green (11-10) put up a pair of runs in the first, three in the third and four in the fourth before the Islanders got on board with a run in the fifth inning.

The Mean Green led the opening frame with two hits. Paige Kisling tripled to right center before scoring on a wild pitch. After a Danielle Hoff single to left center, Jordan Terry plated North Texas' second run on a Karly Williams fielder's choice. Islanders' catcher Michelle Sorenson pulled the Islanders out with a 2-4-2 play out at home.

North Texas tacked on three more runs on three hits to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the third. Brooke Foster singled through the middle before Jordan Terry homered to left field. With one out, the Mean Green put runners on first and second with back-to-back walks before sophomore Bethany Slick replaced junior Constance Brandenburg in the Islanders' circle. Jackie Miller followed with a single to right field to plate Hirsch. The Islanders' defense escaped with a fielder's choice put out at second and Slick ended the frame with a punch out.

The Mean Green's bats plated four runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Brooke Foster started the frame with a single to right center before stealing second. After a walk by Kisling, Dani Tefft tallied the first out of the frame with a foul catch in left field. Foster plated the Mean Green's sixth run of the game on a wild pitch. After back-to-back walks by Slick, Ashley Elicerio replaced Slick in the Islanders' circle. The freshman retired the next batter for the second out of the inning. Elicerio followed with a walk to bring in Kisling to score. Sarah McGann hit a RBI single to third base to plate Hoff before Kinsey scored on a wild pitch for a 7-0 Mean Green lead. A ground out to Cassie Carroll at third base ended the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, McKinney singled to right field with two outs before Katelyn Potts reach on a fielder's choice. However, McKinney was called out at second to end the inning. The Islanders' bats got hot in the bottom of the fifth with two hits. Lyles led off the frame with a single to second base and Carroll followed with a ground out to the pitcher to land Lyles on second. J.J. Jackson hit a ground out to first base to advance Lyles to third with two outs. Sorenson then ripped a single through the middle to score Lyles before advancing to second on a wild pitch. However, a Tefft ground out to second ended the game.

Brandenburg (3-7) took the loss for the Islanders in 2.1 innings. She allowed six hits and five runs while walking four batters. Slick tallied one strikeout and allowed two hits and four runs in one inning while Elicerio recorded two strikeouts and allowed three hits in 1.2 innings.

Brittany Simmons (12-5) picked up the win for the Mean Green in five innings. She tallied four strikeouts and allowed three hits and one run.    

The Islanders will open conference play at Chapman Field against first-year member Houston Baptist in a three-game series starting Saturday, March 9.
