Elicerio Shines in 7-3 Victory Over Southern University to Wrap Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – Ashley Elicerio shined in her first career victory in the Islanders' circle today with a 7-3 victory over Southern University at Chapman Field. The freshman recorded a career-high six strikeouts in seven innings and allowed just two hits. The Islanders' bats ignited for eight hits, led by Cassie Carroll who went 2-for-3 on the final day of the Best Western Marina Grand Islanders Classic.

The Islanders (5-10) finished the weekend with a 2-2 record with Constance Brandenburg and Elicerio each picking up a win in the circle. Valerie Perez, Meagan McKinney and Michelle Sorenson all delivered doubles to power the Islanders' past the Jaguars.

Elicerio (1-5) was stellar as she only gave up one run in the first inning on a wild pitch and faced just nine batters the next three innings. The Pflugerville, Texas native didn't allow a Jaguar hit until the bottom of the fifth when Southern's Danielle Jackson singled to shortstop. Southern tallied their second hit of the day in the sixth when they tacked on two runs on a couple Islanders mishaps.  

The Islanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits. Mickayla Cochran led the inning with a single to shortstop before recording her first stolen base of the season. McKinney advanced Cochran to third with a ground out before Perez cranked a double to left field to plate Cochran. J.J. Jackson followed with a single to second base before Perez tacked on the second run after scoring on an error on an Elicerio slap to second.

The Jaguars answered in the bottom of the first with a run on a wild pitch before the Islanders' bats rolled on through the third frame with two hits and five runs to pad the lead to 7-1. Perez jumpstarted the inning with a walk and Jackson reached on a fielder's choice while a sliding Perez advanced to second. With one out, Carroll singled through the left side to load the bases. Sorenson came through next when she drilled a line-drive double to left field to tally two more runs.

After a Jaguar pitching change, Carroll cashed in on a wild pitch while Sorenson advanced to third. The Islanders added two more runs after Dani Tefft reached on an error sending Sorenson home to score. Cochran followed with a ground out before Tefft capped the scoring with the seventh run on a wild pitch.

The Islanders held the Jaguars to just one run until the bottom of the sixth when a couple errors cost the Islanders two runs as rain showers started to come down on Chapman Field. Southern tallied just one hit in the sixth with a single to left field but the Islanders escaped and Elicerio retired the side in the final frame to seal her first victory of the season.

Southern's Delphia Holmes took the loss in 2.1 innings. She allowed six hits, six runs while striking out two and walking one.

The Islanders will head to San Marcos, Texas on March 1-3, to compete in the CentralLink Classic, hosted by former Southland Conference opponent Texas State. The Islanders will face the likes of North Texas, Purdue and Texas State over the three-day event.
