Islanders’ Bats Come Alive in 7-0 Victory over UH-Victoria

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team faced UH-Victoria in a doubleheader today at Chapman Field to open their fall season. In the first game, the Islanders and Jaguars tied 0-0 before the Islanders' bats came alive in the second game to win 7-0 in four innings of play.

Game 1 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 0UH-Victoria 0

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Islanders tallied four hits, but were unable to score, leaving five runners in scoring position.

Cassie Carroll tallied the Islanders' first hit of the game in the bottom of the third with a rip to left field. Freshman Dani Tefft followed with a walk before Mickayla Heller singled to left field. Tefft recorded a stolen base but a pop fly to second by Lindsey Lyles pulled the Jaguars out of the jam.

J.J. Jackson recorded the Islanders third hit of the game with a single down the right field line to start things off in the bottom of the fifth. Karissa Haleman reached base on a hit by pitch and moved to second on a Katelyn Bates' sacrifice bunt. The Jaguars escaped though leaving Islanders on second and third.   

Carroll, Jackson, Heller and Haleman all tallied one hit apiece.

Junior Constance Brandenburg and sophomore Bethany Slick split duties in the circle, registering four innings apiece. Brandenburg tallied three strikeouts while Slick recorded one. 

Game 2 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 7UH-Victoria 0 (4 innings)

In the second game, the Islanders' bats came alive to start things off. Heller led the top of the order by reaching base on an error by the Jaguars shortstop. Lyles followed with a single to left field and Meagan McKinney walked to load the bases. A double to left field by Jackson plated the Islanders' first two runs of the evening. McKinney scored the Islanders third run after Valerie Perez reached base on a fielder's choice and Carroll followed with a walk to load the bases. Freshman pitcher Ashley Elicerio reached on an error to score Katelyn Bates and give the Islanders a 4-0 lead.

The Islanders padded the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on two hits before play was suspended.

Offensively, Heller, Lyles, Perez and McKinney all recorded one hit apiece, while Jackson tallied two. The junior led the team today with three hits in the two games combined.

Elicerio registered two strikeouts in the circle and limited the Jaguars to just two hits in four innings. 

The Islanders continue their fall season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Chapman Field against Texas A&M International University at 10 a.m. and Houston-Victoria at 12 p.m.
