Islanders Slip Past Houston Baptist, 3-2
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team edged Houston Baptist University 3-2 in a Thursday non-conference matchup at Chapman Field. The Islanders scored early in the bottom of the third before plating two in the fifth to take an early 3-0 lead. HBU pulled within two on a two-run double in the sixth but the Islanders were able to hold on and improve to 6-5 at home.
The Islanders (13-16, 8-4 SLC) outhit the Huskies (13-24, 2-4 Great West) six to four to seal its fourth non-conference victory of the season. Jordan Trujillo (5-5) picked up the win in the circle to even her record. The senior allowed four hits while walking two and striking out four in seven innings. Trujillo retired 14 consecutive batters starting in the bottom of the first all the way through the top of the sixth before the Huskies got on board.
Cassie Redman started things off for the Islanders in the top of the third with a single to right field and scored on Sandy Schumann's RBI sacrifice bunt. Stephanie Vead tallied a single up the middle to register the Islanders' fourth hit of the game. Prior to that, Hannah Schwarz singled to left field in the first and Hayley Galloway hit a solo shot to left center in the second.
The Islanders plated two more runs in the fifth with Redman collecting her second run of the game. Mickayla Heller started the inning with her second double of the season to left field. Redman followed by reaching base on an error and Schwarz ripped a single to right field to score Heller and Redman and pad the Islanders lead to 3-0.
The Huskies came back in the sixth frame with two runs and one hit. After retiring 14 consecutive batters, Trujillo walked two batters with two outs and Michaela Granchelli hit a two-run double to left center. Trujillo was able to pull out of the jam with her third strikeout of the game.
Schwarz went 2-for-2 to lead the Islanders and Redman, Vead, Galloway and Heller all tallied one hit a piece. Schwarz also registered two RBIs and Schumann added one.
Keely Schuler took the loss for the Huskies in six innings. She allowed six hits while striking out one and walking none.
The Islanders will swing back into Southland play at home on Friday and Saturday against Stephen F. Austin. First pitch tomorrow is at 2 p.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
