CONWAY, Ark. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team put together a huge sixth inning and scored one run in the eighth to edge Central Arkansas 5-4 in extra innings Friday in the first of two games at Farris Field.
The Islanders (9-14, 5-4 SLC) outhit the Bears (25-12, 5-2) 10 to five en route to their fifth conference victory of the season. Senior Jordan Trujillo (4-5) picked up the win in relief for Greta Cecchetti.
The Islanders' powerful bats came through in the top of the second. Jamise Jackson led things off with a walk before McKinney reached on an error to move Jackson to second. Carroll followed with a fielder's choice and Heller's base hit to third loaded the bases with two outs. Kelsie Armstrong pulled the Bears out of the inning with a strikeout to leave three Islanders stranded.
The Bears answered with two hits and two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Dear led the Bears bat's off with a single to left center and scored on a wild pitch after the Bears' two walks. Central Arkansas tacked on another run after a Katie McGregor rip to left field.
The Islanders tallied two hits in the fourth frame. Vead hit a shot between first and second with two outs. Carroll followed suit with a hit to the right side but the Bears ended the inning with two Islanders stranded.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi responded with a huge four-run four-hit sixth inning. Jackson led the inning off with a walk before McKinney blasted a double to right field to score Jackson. McKinney advanced to third on a scoring error before Carroll's RBI single rolled through the left side to score McKinney and knot the score at 2-2. The Islanders tacked on two more runs to take a 4-2 lead. Heller reached base on a fielder's choice and Galloway singled to second base to move Heller to second. Schwarz loaded the bases with a fielder's choice before Galloway and Heller scored on two Bears' errors.
The Bears answered with two runs in the seventh frame on three hits to even the game at 4-4. Central Arkansas started the inning off with two bunts and followed with a double to left center.
In the eighth inning, Heller led off the frame with a single to third base and scored on a Hannah Schwarz sacrifice bunt.
Cecchetti registered her third straight six strikeout game. She limited the Bears to just two hits in four innings. Trujillo struck out one batter while allowing three hits in four innings.
Armstrong (14-8) took the loss in the circle for the Bears in six innings of play. She allowed six hits, three walks while striking out six batters.
The Islanders will look for the sweep tomorrow when the two teams face each other at 12 p.m. at Farris Field.
