Softball Splits Fourth Straight, Falls to UT Arlington 2-0

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team suffered their fourth consecutive Southland Conference split of the season Saturday, dropping a 2-0 loss to UT Arlington at Allan Saxe Field in Arlington, Texas.

UT Arlington (11-13, 1-1) outhit the Islanders 7-4 and left nine Islanders stranded en route to their first conference win of the season. The Islanders (8-14, 4-4) and Mavericks stayed scoreless through two innings, before UTA scored one in the third and one in the fourth to secure the victory.

Vianca Pesina (1-5) suffered her fifth loss of the season in the circle. The senior tallied one strikeout and didn't give up a walk while facing 25 batters in six innings of work.

Cassie Redman and Hannah Schwarz started things off in the opening frame with walks before the Mavericks defense left the Islanders stranded with one on base.

In the second inning, Valerie Perez tallied the Islanders first hit of the game with a solo shot through first and second with two outs and Callie Collins walked Mickayla Heller to put runners on first and second. The Mavericks were able to get out of the inning though with a groundout.

The Islanders were in scoring position in the third. With Redman on first, Schwarz reached base on a fielder's choice. Schumann then moved Schwarz to second on a rip to left field with one out. Jackson followed suit with a fielder's choice to second to advance Schumann to third. The Mavericks defense once again pulled through to garner the third out of the inning.

The Mavericks tacked on the first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Erica Leflore singled to left center to plate Courtney Zink.

Cassie Carroll started things off for the Islanders in the bottom of the fifth by reaching base before Perez's sacrifice bunt advanced Carroll to second. However, Collins retired the next two Islander batters to pull the Mavericks out of the inning. UT Arlington built a 2-0 lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Courtney Enocksen blasted a shot to left center in the gap of Alejia Cain and Redman. Kaiser then drove her in on a single before Heller pulled the Islanders out of the inning with a throw down to second to get Kaiser out stealing.

The Islanders' bats started to get things going in the fifth. Redman led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a Schwarz fielder's choice. Schumann followed by reaching base on an error by the second baseman, but the Mavs defense executed leaving two Islanders stranded.

Redman, Schumann, Perez and Cain all tallied one hit apiece for the Islanders.

Collins (6-6) picked up the win for the Mavericks in six innings. She allowed three walks while striking out four.

The Islanders will return home to host Houston Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Chapman Field.
