Islanders’ First Inning Bats Power Past Mavs, 1-0

ARLINGTON, Texas – Cassie Redman and Sandy Schumann each blasted doubles in the first frame to power the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi offense past UT Arlington, 1-0, Friday night at Allan Saxe Field in Arlington, Texas.

Greta Cecchetti (4-3) propelled the Islanders (8-13, 4-3) defense with her second straight win and fourth win of the season. The senior limited the Mavericks (10-13, 0-1) to just two hits in seven innings of work while striking out six batters.

The Islanders tallied four hits with Schumann leading the way with two and Redman and Meagan McKinney chipping in one apiece.

The Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Cassie Redman doubled down the right field line to start things off. Hannah Schwarz moved her to second before Sandy Schumann ripped an RBI double to right center to plate Redman.

The Mavericks tallied their first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the bottom of the second before Cecchetti struck out the next batter.

Schumann led things off with a single to second base in the top of the fourth and stole second with one out. McKinney reached based on a fielder's choice before the Mavericks defense executed.

McKinney tallied the Islanders fourth hit of the game with a solo shot to right field in the top of the seventh with one out. The Mavericks answered with their second hit of the game in the final frame before Cecchetti retired her sixth batter and the Islanders defense sealed the victory.

Teri Lyles (5-7) suffered the loss for the Mavericks in seven innings of work. She allowed the Islanders four hits and five strikeouts.

The Islanders and Mavericks will play again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
