Softball Stumbles Against No. 12 Louisiana in Five, 19-1

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team fell to No. 12 Louisiana today, 19-1, in five innings, on the final day of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Lamson Park. The Islanders (4-10) finished the three-day event with a 2-3 record, with victories coming against Kentucky and Southland foe Nicholls State.

Louisiana (16-0) jumped out to a 10-0 first inning lead over the Islanders with seven hits. Katie Smith delivered a bunt from Islanders hurler Greta Cecchetti to start things off for the Ragin' Cajuns. Christi Orgeron followed with a two-run double to center field to bring in Smith and Nerissa Myers. Louisiana padded the lead to 3-0 when Paige Cormier singled to left field to plate Orgeron. Matte Haack eventually scored on a Sarah Draheim sacrifice fly to right field. Louisiana tacked on two more runs on an Islanders defensive error to build a six-point lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns' bats rolled on, plating four more runs in the opening frame on an Orgeron two-run single to left field and Haack followed suit with a two-run double to right center to give Louisiana a 10-point cushion.

Laura Phillips led the Islanders in the second inning with a single to center field and Meagan McKinney reached on a fielder's choice. Jamise Jackson also chipped in a fielder's choice to score McKinney to put the Islanders on the board.  

Louisiana added four more runs in the third and five in the fourth to take a 19-0 lead. The Ragin Cajuns' registered four hits in the third frame and five hits in the fourth.

In the fourth, Mickayla Heller reached on an error before Stephanie Vead singled to right field. Louisiana however ended the inning on a double play and halted the Islanders from scoring. In the final frame, Louisiana loaded the bases before Jordan Trujillo pulled the Islanders out of the inning with a strikeout.

The Islanders tallied three hits in the fifth. Jackson singled to start the inning and Sandy Schumann singled down the left field line. Hannah Schwarz also added a single to left field before Louisiana's defense ended the inning and the game on a groundout.

The Islanders tallied five hits with Schwarz, Phillips, Vead, Jackson and Schumann all chipping in one apiece. Cecchetti (1-3) took the loss for the Islanders in one inning. She allowed five hits, eight runs and walked two batters. Vianca Pesina allowed 10 hits, four walks in 3.1 innings pitched. Trujillo allowed three hits, one run, two walks, while striking out four batters in 1.1 inning.

Shelbee Rodgers (2-0) picked up the win for the undefeated Ragin' Cajuns in three innings of work. She limited the Islanders offense to just two hits, one run and one walk while striking out two batters. Natalie Fernandez led Louisiana with four hits and three RBIs. Nine of Louisiana's batters registered at least one hit with a total of 18.

The Islanders will return home for a four-game homestand starting on March 7 at 1 p.m. First up is a midweek doubleheader against UTSA, followed by two games against Texas State on March 9th and 10th.
