Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 9/10 Baylor in Home Opener
CORPUS CHRISTI – After two days of battling wet weather conditions, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team squared off against No. 9/10 Baylor Sunday in the Islanders season home opener. Baylor sealed the first game 6-1 and followed it with a 3-0 victory improving to 6-1 while the Islanders dropped their sixth game against Top 25 opponents to move to 1-6.
The Islanders will continue their homestand at Chapman Field on Friday, Feb. 24, with the Best Western Marina Grand Islanders Classic. The Islanders are slated to play North Dakota, Ole Miss and Texas Southern over the three-day event.

Game 1: Baylor 6, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 1
Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the top of the second. Megan Turk started the Lady Bears offense with a solo shot and advanced to third on a Delaney Guy single and an error before stealing home for the Lady Bears' first run of the day.
The Islanders knotted the score at 1-1 at the bottom of the fourth when Cassie Carroll stepped up to the plate to open the frame. The freshman ripped her first career home run over the left field fence on a 2-1 count.
The Lady Bears took the lead for good though, answering in the top of the fifth inning with two runs on three hits. Baylor's hurler Whitney Canion doubled to left center to plate two runs to give the Lady Bears' a 3-1 lead. Baylor's powerful bats rolled on through the sixth frame to score three more runs to cap the scoring. Kathy Shelton doubled to right center to drive in one run and eventually scored on a Kayce Walker single. Holly Holl's RBI single scored Walker before the Islanders pitching staff brought in sophomore Constance Brandenburg to finish the inning.
Senior Jordan Trujillo (1-2) took the loss for the Islanders in five innings pitched. She allowed nine hits on six runs while walking three and striking out three. Brandenburg recorded one strikeout in her first inning of action this season.
The Lady Bears' Whitney Canion (3-0) picked up the victory in six innings of work. She allowed three hits, one run, six walks while striking out seven batters.
Game 2: Baylor 3, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 0
Baylor carried over their momentum into the second game to tack up two runs in the opening frame. Shelton and Walker singled off Greta Cecchetti to jumpstart the Lady Bears offense. Shelton tacked up Baylor's first run of the game, scoring on a wild pitch and Walker stole third before Holly Holl added an RBI double to plate Walker and give the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead.
The Islanders and Lady Bears had quiet bats until the top of the sixth. Baylor padded the lead to 3-0 when Jordan Strickland's single down the left field line rolled fair off of Vianca Pesina who came in to relieve Cecchetti. Shelbi Redfearn's RBI double to left center scored Strickland to finish the scoring.
Cecchetti (0-2) took the loss for the Islanders in five innings of work. The senior gave up six hits, two runs, one walk while striking out four. Pesina allowed just three hits, one run while striking out two in two innings of work.
Courtney Repka went the distance sealing her second victory of the season and limited the Islanders to just one hit and one walk while striking out five in seven innings.
