HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team opened up the 2012 season this evening at the University of Houston - Hilton Houston Plaza Classic at Cougar Softball Stadium. After a rain delay that pushed the games back four hours, the No. 20-ranked Houston Cougars' offense took control early in the first inning, scoring nine runs, to win the first game of the three-day event, 10-0, in five innings.
Senior Jordan Trujillo took the loss for the Islanders (0-1), giving up nine runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one. Senior Vianca relieved Trujillo in the first inning, allowing just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Cougars' powerful bats started things off at the top of the first inning. Houston (1-0) jumped out to nine runs in the top of the first with the first nine batters each plating runs. Jennifer Klinkert led the Cougars with two hits, one run and one RBI while Hayley Outon tacked up two runs and one hit. Jaime Edwards also chipped in two RBIs, one run and one hit. The Cougars 10th run came in the top of the fourth, after Outon reached base on a walk, Klinkert doubled and Edwards followed it with an RBI to first base to plate Outon.
The Islanders put up four hits, including two in the bottom of the third. Senior Alejia Cain singled to start the inning while freshman Cassie Carroll doubled in her first game as an Islander to advance Cain to third. The Islanders were stranded though as junior Meagan McKinney popped up to first base to end the inning. Freshman Hayley Galloway also added a hit in her first collegiate game in the second inning while senior Sandy Schumann singled in the fourth.
Bailey Watts limited the Islanders to four hits while striking out eight and walking four in five innings.
The Islanders will continue play tomorrow in the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic when they square off against No. 11 Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. followed by a 5 p.m. matchup vs. North Texas. Oklahoma State (2-0) picked up two shut-out wins today over North Texas and Sam Houston State. North Texas (0-1) fell to the Cowgirls 2-0.
