Men’s Tennis Clinches Seventh Straight SLC Regular-Season Title

CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team clinched their seventh straight Southland Conference regular-season title today with a 6-1 victory over New Orleans at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on senior day. The match was sponsored by the Matt Robinson Family and the Islanders (17-9, 6-0 SLC) allowed just their fifth point this season in Southland play.

"I'm proud of this group because of the way they won it, getting better each week and staying strong together through adversity," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "Peter Nagy and Matt Westmoreland have been amazing captains, really setting the tone for our intensity and the spirit that our team plays with. I can't speak highly enough about our captains this year and the way they have led by example.

"It means a lot to me to give our amazing athletic department two Southland Conference trophies. I could not ask for a better athletic administration that is more supportive of our program and always looking to make things better. I attribute the successful we have had largely to the leadership of our athletic department."

The Islanders won the title by a season score of 35-5. A&M - Corpus Christi secured the doubles point today before winning five of the six singles matches over the Privateers (6-10, 2-4 SLC) on Matt Westmoreland's senior day.

"I'm so proud of Matt Westmoreland on senior day from the minute he got here we knew the kind of hard-working disciplined team guy that was the absolute perfect fit for the Islanders," Moore said. He has been exactly that."

The Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the freshman-senior duo of Paul Cook and Westmoreland downed Blake Gregor and Luis Alburquerque, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles. The tandem of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo then topped Timo Kranz and Gonzalo Garcia, 8-4, to win their third straight match in No. 1 doubles. The Islanders pair of Ricardo Mayagoitia and Javier Pujol dropped an 8-5 loss to Rui Silva and Chris Appelgren in No. 3 doubles.

A&M - Corpus Christi kept the momentum going, winning the next three singles matches to clinch the match. Nagy took care of business in No. 1 singles with a straight-set, 6-0, 6-2, victory over Garcia. The junior has recorded a perfect 6-0 record this season in Southland play at No. 1 singles and a team-best 18-3 dual-match record. The Budapest, Hungary native has tallied a 15-1 career record in the Southland, with his only loss in his career in conference play coming during his freshman year.

The Islanders extended their lead to 3-0 after Cook cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 slot over Alburquerque to win his fifth straight match. Mayagoitia then clinched the regular-season title for the Islanders with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kraunz in No. 2 singles.

A&M - Corpus Christi tacked on their fifth point of the day at the No. 3 slot where Pujol defeated Gregor, 6-4, 6-4, to win his fifth consecutive match and stay undefeated in Southland play. The Privateers then answered with a three-set win in No. 4 singles. Westmoreland sealed a 6-2 first-set win, before dropping the second set, 6-3. In the third, Silva edged Westmoreland, 10-7, in the super-tiebreaker. Rauseo concluded the match with a three-set win over Appelgren in No. 5 singles. The sophomore won the first set 6-4 before dropping a 6-4 second-second loss. In the third, Rauseo won a tight 10-8 super-tiebreaker.

"I would be remiss without giving a lot of credit to this amazing group of assistant coaches and staff, who work incredibly long hours to contribute to the success of this team," Moore said. "They work as hard as you can ask a staff to work and maybe harder, so I'm extremely grateful for this group of coaches I have the privilege to work with. They are just like our players, incredibly high character and hard working."

The Islanders will host the Southland Conference Tournament this weekend and will face New Orleans at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
