Matt Westmoreland to be Recognized Monday During Senior Day Match

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team will wrap the regular-season when they host New Orleans on senior day, Monday, April 21, at 1 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. It will mark senior Matt Westmoreland's final regular-season match in front of the great Corpus Christi community. The Islanders (16-9, 5-0 SLC) are just one win away from clinching their seventh straight Southland Conference regular-season title.

Monday's senior day match will be sponsored by the family of Islanders legend Nathan Robinson.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the Robinson Family for sponsoring our men's senior day," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "There's not a guy that I have ever coached that cared more about the team than Nathan Robinson, so this is very fitting to have his family's name on senior day. Nathan Robinson was the ultimate Islander. He won the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the entire conference and worked his way from seven to three as a senior through incredible hard work. He was absolutely the best teammate you could ever ask for. We're very proud to have his family's name on our senior day.

"Nathan currently works for Stripes, a first-class organization that we have the highest respect for. Stripes is also a supporter for Islanders Tennis that we are extremely gracious for."

Monday will be a special day for Westmoreland, who is second all-time in singles wins in Islanders program history behind Associate Head Coach Goncalo Figueiredo. The senior co-captain holds a career singles record of 47-32 in his four years.

The native of Oahu, Hawaii has had a storied career for the Islanders, clinching the Southland Conference regular-season title in 2011 for the Islanders as the last match on at UTSA. He was part of the group that won the Southland Conference regular season and was in the ITA national rankings every year he was an Islander.

The men's team is on a four-match winning streak and have only allowed four points in Southland play this season. The team is coming off a crucial 4-1 victory over Abilene Christian on Wednesday, and have won 11 consecutive regular-season conference matches in three years. The team has lost just one regular-season Southland Conference match in the last eight years since Coach Moore returned to take over the men's team in 2007.

Fellow co-captain Peter Nagy has had another impressive year for the Islanders with a team-best 17-3 dual-match record. The junior is undefeated in Southland play at No. 1 singles with a perfect 5-0 record and is currently on a five-match winning streak. The Budapest, Hungary native has registered a 14-1 career record in the Southland, with his only loss in his career in conference play coming during his freshman year.

Sophomore Javier Pujol and freshman Paul Cook have also been consistently strong for the Islanders in singles play. They both enter Monday's match on a four-match winning streak and a 5-0 record in Southland play. Pujol holds an overall mark of 14-9 while fellow sophomore Ricardo Mayagoitia has compiled a 12-7 mark at No. 2 singles.

In doubles play, Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo are on a two-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles and have registered an 8-6 mark. Prior to Wednesday's loss, Pujol and Mayagoitia had won three straight at No. 3 doubles.

The Privateers (6-9, 2-3 SLC) are coming off a pair of non-conference losses and have posted Southland wins over Lamar and Oral Roberts this season. Chris Appelgren leads UNO in singles play with a 7-5 record, and has teamed up with Rui Silva for a 7-5 mark in doubles play.

Last season, the Islanders faced the Privateers twice, once during the regular season and a final time in the championship match of the Southland Conference Tournament. In the first meeting, the Islanders topped UNO, 5-1, in a neutral-site match in Austin. In the championship match, the Islanders fell behind early 2-0 before roaring back to win 4-2 and clinch the Southland Tournament and an automatic birth into the NCAA Championships.

Following Monday's match, the men's and women's tennis teams will compete in the Southland Conference Tournament, hosted by the Islanders at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, April 25-27.
