Pujol Named Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Javier Pujol has been named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced today. Pujol posted singles and doubles victories in all three of the Islanders Southland matches last week to power the men's team to a perfect 4-0 record in conference play.
"Javier has matured and become so mentally tough," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "He's really learned and grown so much. He understands his game style, and he realizes that if he plays it and sticks with it through the good moments and the bad moments, that he is extremely tough to beat. Now that he believes, I am expecting great things from him every week.
"What I'm really impressed with most is his doubles, and how he commits to playing a smart chess match and plays the schemes that we ask. Javier has become a heck of a doubles player and is winning consistently in both. I'm very proud of Javier."
The Barcelona, Spain native clinched the match for the Islanders over Lamar with a straight-set victory in No. 3 singles for his first win of the season in the No. 3 position. He followed his performance with a three-set super tiebreaker win over Incarnate Word in No. 4 singles before registering a straight-set victory in the No. 3 slot against Nicholls.
Pujol is undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record and has collected a 13-9 overall mark. In doubles action, he has teamed up with Ricardo Mayagoitia in the No. 3 slot, and the duo has secured all three of their conference matches.
The men's team (15-9, 4-0 SLC) has earned five conference weekly honors this season. Along with Pujol, Peter Nagy has earned the honor three times, and Guillaume Rauseo earned the weekly accolade during the opening week of play.
Pujol and the rest of the Islanders men's team along with the women's team will return to action on Wednesday, April 16, in Austin, Texas, to take on first-year Southland member Abilene Christian in a neutral-site conference match at 10 a.m.
