Islanders Roll Past Incarnate Word, 6-1
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team grinded out a 6-1 victory today over first-year Southland member Incarnate Word at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Islanders (14-9, 3-0 SLC) picked up the doubles point before winning five singles matches over the Cardinals (13-5, 1-3 SLC).
"Incarnate Word was tough," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I thought certain guys for us were excellent today in some facets. I thought there were other things extremely lacking that we better commit to improve on very quick at this point of the season."
After dropping the first doubles match at No. 1, the Islanders rallied back to secure the doubles point on courts two and three to open with a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals. The duo of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo fell 8-3 to Leonard Ivic and Josip Smoljan in No. 1 doubles, before the tandem of Ricardo Mayagoitia and Javier Pujol evened things up at No. 3 doubles. The pair topped Brandon Davis and Antonio Cavazos, 8-3, for their second consecutive conference win of the season. The freshman-senior duo of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook then teamed up to knock off Jair Assuncao and Tucker Brown in No. 2 doubles, 8-3, and garner the doubles point for A&M - Corpus Christi.
The Islanders, who are seeking their seventh straight Southland Conference title, took care of business early with three straight-set singles victories to clinch the match at 4-0. Cook downed Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-1, to win his second consecutive match at No. 6 singles and improve to 6-4 on the year.
Rauseo followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Davis in No. 5 singles, before Nagy clinched the match for the Islanders in No. 1 singles. The junior earned his third straight win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Assuncao to extend the Islanders lead to 4-0. Nagy is now 15-3 on the year and 3-0 in the Southland. In his three years, he has tallied a 12-1 record in the Southland, with his only loss in his career in conference play coming during his freshman year.
The Cardinals got on board after Smoljan defeated Westmoreland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. However, the Islanders closed the match out with two super tiebreaker wins on courts two and four. Pujol squeezed out a 10-8 super tiebreaker in No. 4 singles over Brown after dropping the first set 7-6 (5) and winning the second set, 6-3. The sophomore has won three straight to improve to 12-9 and 3-0 in conference play.
Mayagoitia clinched the final singles match of the day in No. 2 singles after garnering a three-set super tiebreaker win over Ivic. In the first set, the sophomore picked up a 6-3 victory before dropping a close 7-5 second set. In the tiebreaker, Mayagoitia and Ivic were locked at 6-6, before Mayagoitia earned three straight points to push ahead 9-6. After Ivic won the next point, Mayagoitia secured the win, 10-7, and the Islanders' six point of the day. He improves his singles record to 11-7 and 3-0 in Southland play.
The Islanders men's team has lost just one regular-season Southland Conference match in the last eight years since Coach Moore returned to take over the men's team in 2007.
A&M - Corpus Christi will continue Southland play at home on Friday at 12 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center against Nicholls, who will enter play with an 11-9 mark, including a 4-1 record in conference play.
