Peter Nagy Named Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior Peter Nagy has been named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the week, the league announced today. It marks the third time this season Nagy has earned the weekly honor and the sixth time in his career.

"Peter has worked so hard and continues to add key facets to his game," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "Lots of players try and do that, but few put in the work to be proficient at them as the season evolves. Peter is so motivated. He puts in the work and really listens to coaching, then goes out and puts in hundreds of hours to improve his game.

"He really tries to maximize every area that he can control. He's changed his body through very disciplined eating and has become a lot stronger. His serve and backhand have improved greatly and so has his attacking game and volley. Peter played very high-level matches at No. 1 against TCU and Texas, 7-5 in the third to TCU, and a third set-tiebreaker to Texas. He got knocked down a couple of times, but he really showed his character and kept getting back up, and staying in the present and fighting hard. He played a great match Monday against one of the elite players in the country. It's good to see his hard work validated and recognized."

Nagy, who has had an impressive year for the Islanders at No. 1 singles, picked up a three-set win over Oklahoma State's No. 61 Jakob Sude at No. 1 singles on Monday. After falling in a tough three-setter at TCU on Wednesday to No. 46 ranked Nick Chappell, Nagy battled his way back over Sude, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 13-3 in No. 1 singles. It marked his first victory over a ranked player this season and his 13th win at No. 1 singles.

In doubles play, Nagy has teamed up with Guillaume Rauseo at No. 1 doubles this season to compile a 6-5 record. The duo is currently on a two-match winning streak after winning 8-5 against Rice and 8-5 against No. 67 Tulane.

The men's team (12-9, 1-0 SLC) has earned four conference weekly honors this season. Prior to Nagy's three honors, Rauseo earned the weekly accolade during the opening week of play.

Nagy and the rest of the Islanders men's team will continue Southland play on Tuesday, April 8 at Lamar.
