CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams will host first-year Southland Conference member Abilene Christian Tuesday, March 11, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Doubles action will begin at 10 a.m.
The Islanders have had tremendous support from the Corpus Christi community at their home matches this season. The men's tennis team was recently ranked No. 9 in the ITA national attendance rankings. It marked the second year in a row the Islanders have been ranked in the top 10.
"The crowds encourage us to fight harder and they make a huge difference at our matches," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "The appreciation from the players make us even want to fight harder for these crowds. To be recognized in the top 10 nationally means a lot to this team and this university. We are trying very hard and rankings like this validate this hard work."
The men's team enters Tuesday's conference match with an 11-6 record including a 1-0 mark in Southland Conference play. The Islanders are coming off a 4-0 victory over Western Michigan in the 48th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders women's team sits at 6-2 and will open Southland play against the Wildcats. In the team's last match against New Mexico State, senior Sandra Burges came back from a set down to win the next two, and clinch the match, 4-3, for the Islanders.
"We are now entering the conference faze of the season, as each conference battles for a conference title and an automatic birth to the NCAA Team Championships," Moore said. "This is the strongest the conference has ever been since I have been here in the last eight years, so we have a lot of tough battles ahead and a lot of hard work to do."
Junior Peter Nagy has been outstanding for the Islanders this season, compiling an 11-2 record in No. 1 singles. Ricardo Mayagoitia holds an 8-4 record in No. 2 singles while Javier Pujol has registered a 9-6 singles record.
In the first conference match of the season, the Islanders men's team downed Oral Roberts 7-0 in Dallas. The Islanders clinched the doubles point and went on to win all six singles matches to secure their seventh straight victory of the season.
For the women's team, Celia Rodriguez holds a 7-1 singles record and a 4-2 mark in No. 3 doubles play with fellow sophomore Maider Martin. Freshman Judit Vives has had an impressive freshman year so far in her first year as an Islander. The Barcelona, Spain native has tallied a perfect 6-0 record in singles play and is also undefeated in doubles play with Burges in the No. 2 slot with a 5-0 record.
Last season, the women's team advanced to the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament, while placing second in the conference during the regular season.
The Abilene Christian men's team enters Tuesday's match with a 6-7 record, including 1-0 record in conference play. The women's team holds a 9-2 record and a 1-0 mark in conference play.
Following Tuesday's match the women's team will travel to San Antonio to face UTSA on Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. The men's team will head to Houston to take on Rice on March 21 and Tulane on March 22.
