Men's Tennis Falls 4-0 to South Alabama in Opening Round of H-E-B Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to South Alabama in the opening round of the 48th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

"Give credit to South Alabama," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They outfought us today on our home court. It's not easy for me to say, but it's the truth. They are a very good team and they deserved to win today. This team will stay in the present and keep fighting."

The Islanders (9-6) fell behind early after the Jaguars (8-3) notched the doubles point on courts two and three. In No. 2 doubles, USA's Daniel Leitner and Tuki Jacobs garnered an 8-5 win over the senior-freshman pair of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook before the Jaguars' Shayann Vaezzadeh and Juan Troglia topped freshman Philip Kuehnen and junior Pietro Jordao 8-2 in the No. 3 spot. The duo of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo were up 6-5 over Manuel Belda and Gerhard Gruindelingh in No. 1 doubles when the point was clinched.

South Alabama kept the momentum going into singles play with straight-set wins on courts two, three and five to win. In No. 2 singles, sophomore Ricardo Mayagoitia fell to Belda 6-3, 6-2 for the Jaguars second point of the day. Rauseo dropped a tight 7-5 first set to Jacobs in the No. 3 slot before falling 6-0 in the second set. South Alabama clinched the match in No. 5 singles after Vaezzadeh topped Westmoreland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

When play was stopped, Nagy was leading No. 94 ranked Leitner in No. 1 singles, 3-1, in the third set after winning the first set 6-3. The junior dropped the second set 6-3 before bouncing back in the third. Javier Pujol was also ahead in his second set 5-4 and was leading 40-love over Gruindelingh in the No. 4 spot. The sophomore lost the first set in a tough tiebreaker 7-6 (4). In the final singles match of the day in No. 6 singles, Cook was battling Troglia in a third set. The freshman lost the first set 6-3 before answering with a 6-1 second-set win. In the third, Cook was trailing 2-1.

The Islanders will continue play in the prestigious H-E-B Tournament of the Champions at 4 p.m. when they take on DePaul. The Blue Demons fell 4-0 to Louisiana-Lafayette in the first round and will come into the match with a 2-6 record.
