Islanders Tennis Splits With Louisiana-Lafayette on the Road

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team blanked Louisiana-Lafayette 4-0, while the men's team came up short 4-2 Tuesday at the Cajun Courts. The women's team improves to 5-2 while the men's team moves to 8-4 on the year.

"I thought our girls competed extremely tough today on the road," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They are all working hard and getting better at key things that make a difference as the season becomes the hot and windy footwork faze of the season where fitness is at a premium. I'm excited for the future for these girls because they are learning and getting better every week."

The women's team came out strong picking up the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Maider Martin teamed up with Celia Rodriguez, who was named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week today, to sweep Julie Cremers and Alexandra Way, 8-0, in No. 3 doubles. The freshman-duo of Stefania Nicolae and Kerry Galhos followed suit with an 8-6 victory over Nelo Phiri and Nicole Breaux in the No. 1 slot to clinch the point for the Islanders. A&M - Corpus Christi capped doubles play with an 8-6 win in the No. 2 position. The Islanders' duo of Sandra Burges and Judit Vives topped Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement, 8-6.

The Islanders kept the momentum going into singles play winning the first three matches. Vives kept her perfect streak going with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory over Eleanor Bradshaw to improve to 5-0 in No. 6 singles. The Islanders sealed their third point of the day with Burges taking a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Burckhartt to win her first match in the No. 4 position. Rodriguez, who clinched a huge 4-3 victory over SMU last week, captured the match for the Islanders today with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Way in the No. 3 spot. The sophomore is now 6-1 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles play with Martin.

On the men's side, the Islanders dropped the doubles point and fell behind 3-0 after losses on courts four and six. A&M - Corpus Christi roared back to pull within one, 3-2, with victories on the first two courts. With the match on the line, the Islanders were leading on courts three and five, before a late rally on court five lifted the Ragin' Cajuns to a 4-1 victory.

"Our guys fought until the end," Moore said. "They were committed to fighting until the end, but give Louisiana-Lafayette a lot of credit. They are an extremely tough-spirited team that really competes well on their home court. They deserve a lot of credit for the way they competed today.

"We will be fine. We have to correct some mistakes at key times and remember who we are. I have total confidence in these guys and I believe with 100 percent certainty that they will keep improving and getting better, because that's what happens when you have character players."

ULL swept the Islanders in doubles play on all three courts. Pietro Jordao and Javier Pujol fell to Damian Farinola and Edgar Lopez 8-0 in No. 3 doubles before the Ragin' Cajuns garnered the doubles point in the No. 2 slot. The freshman-senior duo of Paul Cook and Matt Westmoreland came up short 8-5 to Jake Wynan and Jarred Wynan. In No. 1 doubles, Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo were edged 8-7 (5) by Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson in the final doubles match of the day.

The Ragin' Cajuns pushed ahead 3-0 with back-to-back singles wins. Pujol lost in straight sets to Jake Wynan 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot before Cook fell 6-4, 6-3 to Hunter Johnson in No. 6 singles. The Islanders battled back to pull within one after consecutive wins on courts one and two. Nagy won his eighth straight singles match to improve to 9-1 in the No. 1 spot with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Lopez. Ricardo Mayagoitia followed suit with a three-set victory in No. 2 singles. The sophomore claimed a 6-4 first set win before falling 6-4 in the second set. In the third it was all Mayagoitia with a sweeping 6-0 victory.

With the match on the line, the Islanders never gave up and kept fighting. In No. 5 singles, Westmoreland dropped the first set 7-5, roared back in the second to win 7-5, and was leading 4-3 in the third, before Carl Alberton rallied back to win three straight games to clinch the set 6-4 and the match. In No. 3 singles, Rauseo won a close tiebreaker 7-6 (6) in the first set over Jarred Wynan before falling 6-4 in the second. In the third, the sophomore was ahead 5-4 when the match was clinched.

"I'm excited about the second-half of the season for both of our teams," Moore added.

The men's team will next be in action on Feb. 23 when they face the Longhorns on the Longhorn Network at 6 p.m. in Austin, while the women's team will trek to Edinburg to face UTPA on Feb. 26.
