Islanders Sweep Utah State 4-0 to Wrap New Mexico Trip
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team shut out Utah State, 4-0, today in their second consecutive sweep of the season at the NMSU Tennis Center. The Islanders quickly rolled through doubles play picking up the first two wins and powered their way through three straight-set singles victories to improve to 5-3 on the year.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy in the singles and doubles and really made a statement with our energy," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I thought Utah State competed really hard, and the match was a lot closer than the score.
"Our guys are getting a little better everyday and they are competing with a lot of tenacity. The guys are really making a difference for each other and lifting each other up. I think this road trip was great for our team and we grew a lot. We have a lot of work to do and a lot we need to improve on, but the guys competed tough today."
Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo teamed up for the first doubles win of the day with a 6-2 win over Utah State's (1-2) Fredrik Peterson and Marcus Fritz on court one. The junior-sophomore pair of Pietro Jordao and Javier Pujol mirrored Nagy and Rauseo with a 6-2 win over Dennis Baumgartner and Sean Levesque in the No. 3 slot to clinch the doubles point for the Islanders. The duo of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook were ahead 4-3 against the Aggie pair of Andrew Whiting and Matt Sweet in No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.
A&M - Corpus Christi kept the momentum going into singles play to win three straight. Westmoreland started things off with a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set victory over Levesque in No. 5 singles for the Islanders' second point of the day. Nagy (5-1) then garnered a 6-3 first-set win over Baumgartner in the No. 1 slot before breezing through the second set 6-0 to keep the Islanders in front 3-0. In the No. 4 spot, Pujol downed Sweet 6-0 in the first set before clinching the match for the Islanders 6-4 in the second set.
Ricardo Mayagoitia posted a 6-4 first-set win over Peterson in the No. 2 position and was ahead 3-0 in the second when the match was clinched. Rauseo (No. 3) and Philip Kuehnen (No. 6) both dropped their first sets 4-6 but were ahead in their second sets when play was stopped.
The Islanders men's team along with the women's team will host Maryland Baltimore County in the home opener at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m.
