Islanders Squeeze Past UC Irvine with 4-3 Victory

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team competed in yet another exciting tennis match today on the final day of the Ned and Tina Jacobs Lobo Tennis Winter Kickoff at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. After falling yesterday to UC Irvine (1-4) in a doubles tiebreaker, the No. 67 Islanders (2-3) returned the favor by winning a tight doubles point to clinch the match 4-3 in the first of two matches.

"I'm incredibly proud of how these guys keep fighting and the spirit they have shown," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "This was a match that wasn't going our way for 90 percent of it. All these teams are talented, so it's about who does the little things better. We have to fix some things, and we have to get better at certain things, but I love the character and toughness of these guys."

The Anteaters tacked on the first point today with a straight-set victory in the No. 5 slot. After Matt Westmoreland sent the Islanders into doubles play yesterday with a win over Jonathan Hammel, the Anteater sophomore, answered back with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Westermoreland.

Javier Pujol quickly put the Islanders on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Caryl Hernandez in the No. 4 slot. The Islanders then surged ahead 2-1, after Peter Nagy took care of business in the No. 1 position with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Ryan Cheung. Once again, UC Irvine fought back to knot the match at 2-2 with Shuhei Shibahara capturing the 7-5, 6-2 win over freshman Philip Kuehnen in the No. 6 spot.

UC Irvine jumped in front 3-2 by squeezing out a three-set victory on court two. Rafael Davidian defeated Ricardo Mayagoitia 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to garner the Anteaters their third point of the match. With the match on the line for the second straight day, the Islanders battled back to force doubles play. Sophomore Guillaume Rauseo carried his team into the tiebreaker with a three-set win over Tyler Pham on court three. In the first set, Rauseo grabbed the tiebreaker 7-6 (2) before falling 6-7 (7) in the second set. In the third, it was all Rauseo with the 6-1 victory.

The Islanders and Anteaters went with the same doubles lineup as Saturday night, but this time it was the Islanders recording the 11-9 tiebreaker. UC Irvine notched the first doubles match on court one after the pair of Cheung and Hammel topped the duo of Nagy and Rauseo. The Islander tandem of Pujol and Pietro Jordao quickly responded with a 10-3 win in the No. 3 slot over Shibahara and Pham to even it.

Once again the match was in the hands of Westmoreland and Paul Cook. On Saturday night the duo topped the Anteater pair 10-8, today though it was more intense. With Westmoreland and Cook down two match points, the duo came back to win 11-9 and clinch the victory for the Islanders.

In two straight matches, Westmoreland has saved nine match points where the match has been on the line.

The Islanders will wrap play tonight against Arizona at 4 p.m. MST. In the first match between the two teams, A&M - Corpus Christi secured the 4-2 win.

The Ned and Tina Jacobs Lobo Tennis Winter Kickoff features the new shortened college format where singles is played first and the match stops when the team reaches four points. In the case of a 3-3 tie, the winner will be determined by who takes the best two of three 10-point tiebreakers in doubles play.
