Men’s Tennis Faces Texas In First Round of NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team will be back in the NCAA Tournament starting this Friday, with the Islanders taking on the Texas Longhorns at 11 a.m. in the opening round of the tournament.

The Islanders (17-7, No. 59 ITA) will take on Texas (16-8, No. 21 ITA) for the second time this season. The Longhorns earned a 6-1 win over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Feb. 2 in Austin during the first meeting.

The two teams will play at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M. The Aggies are hosting the regional as the No. 12 national seed and will play Marist in the other first day match. The two winners will meet at 3 p.m. on Saturday for the regional championship.

Peter Nagy will lead the Islanders into the tournament after helping his team to the Southland Conference Championship in both the regular season and SLC Tournament. Nagy was named the Player of the Year in the conference after going 5-0 without losing a set during the regular season. He is currently 16-2 overall in singles, with a 3-1 mark against nationally ranked singles players.

Gergo Weidinger will be in the No. 2 singles slot for the team, with the senior holding a 13-7 overall mark in singles this season, including a 7-4 record at No. 2. Matt Westmoreland follows at No. 3 with a 14-8 singles tally, going 9-1 at No. 3 since moving from the second position.

Freshman Ricardo Mayagoitia will anchor the No. 4 position, where he has lost just on match all year to go 10-1. Overall, the newcomer is 16-3 on the season, tying Nagy for most overall singles wins. Javier Pujol, another freshman who has come on strong for the Islanders during the season, will follow him at the No. 5 spot. Pujol finished regular season and conference tournament play with a 10-4 record, including 9-3 at No. 5. He clinched the first ever HEB Tournament of Champions title for the Islanders during the season.

Pietro Jordao will get the start at No. 6 singles after winning his final three matches of the season at the position and helping the Islanders win a pair of Southland titles.

In doubles play, Nagy and Weidinger are scheduled to play the No. 1 position, Mayagoitia and Westmoreland at No. 2 and Andrew Maingot and Guillaume Rauseo are set for the No. 3 spot.
