Javier Pujol Named Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's Men's Tennis player Javier Pujol was named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Pujol, a freshman from Spain, becomes the second player on the Islanders team to win the honor. Peter Nagy also won it twice during the regular season, including taking it home last week.

In the final two matches of the regular season, Pujol earned two dominant wins against Southland Conference opponents while losing just one game between the two.

On Thursday against Lamar, Pujol earned a 6-0, 6-0 final over Trey Crysel at No. 5 singles as the Islanders clinched their sixth straight Southland Conference Championship.

He followed that up on Saturday with another strong performance, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles against Felix Hasselberg of Texas – Pan American to help his team earn the outright Southland Conference Title.

Pujol finished the regular season with a 4-1 mark in Southland Conference matches, and had a 9-4 record overall in singles play. He was one of five freshmen in the top eight for a very young Islanders team.

"Javier has matured and improved so much," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "He has become so mentally tough and has been a major contribution every week to our team's success. We are really beginning to count on him, and he is rising up every time."

The Islanders will go into the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, and will face Lamar this coming Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. in Beaumont. The tournament is being held at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on the Lamar campus.
