Islanders Men, Women Sweep Nicholls

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams earned matching 5-2 victories over Nicholls in a pair of neutral-site conference matches on Tuesday afternoon. The men retained their perfect conference record at 3-0, while the women improved to 6-2 in league play with the win.

"I thought our teams showed incredible grit today," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "A lot of people with tired legs fought with all their hearts – we always say that culture is everything and the culture of this team is to fight and never quit.

"Nicholls has a lot of talent on both their men's and women's teams, and for us to go out there and take care of business today was huge," he added. "The Southland Conference has gotten so much better from top to bottom, and every match is a battle."

ISLANDERS MEN 5, NICHOLLS 2

On the men's side, the 57th-ranked Islanders continued their trend of emerging victorious despite losing the doubles point. The duo of Peter Nagy/Gergo Weidinger opened things with an 8-5 victory at No. 1, but that was countered by an 8-4 loss at No. 2 by Matt Westmoreland/Ricardo Mayagoitia. It all came down to the No. 3 doubles tandem of Andrew Maingot/Guillaume Rauseo, but the pair fell to Roy Knight/Evan Karatzas in a tiebreak to put Nicholls up 1-0.

"It confounds me that we continually find a way to win even though we lose the doubles point," Moore said. "It's really a testament to the determination and the toughness that is our biggest strength as a unit. We are a young team, but we need to mature very fast as far as the doubles point is concerned. We have some serious coaching to do in a short amount of time and the clock is ticking."

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi responded by winning five of the six singles matches, all of which were decided in straight sets. The Islanders were able to win at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 in quick fashion, with Nagy taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over Damian Despotovski at No. 1, Mayagoita emerging with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Knight at No. 4 and Javier Pujol posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Karatzas.

At No. 6, Pietro Jordao took a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jeoffrey Noblecourt to clinch the match, and Westmoreland finished things off with a 6-3, 7-6 win against Nico Mertens, posting a 9-7 triumph in the tiebreak. The lone Islander in the loss column was Weidinger, who fell in his singles match at No. 2, which ended up a 6-4, 6-2 defeat.

ISLANDERS WOMEN 5, NICHOLLS 2

On the women's side, the doubles set the tone, as the Islanders took victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to garner the doubles point, then won four out of six singles matches to earn the victory.

"This was another gritty, hard-fought victory for these tough girls playing their third match in a span of four days," Moore said. "I liked the message they sent because the conference tournament is won by the team that can win three tough matches in a row. We haven't played three days in a row yet, but we're improving and we showed incredible heart in that tough third match today.

"It's not easy to play long points and pay the price day after day, but that's what they're doing and that's why I love the character of these girls," he added. "I feel the choices they've made to become an incredibly fit team made a difference today and should give us an earned confidence as we approach the conference tournament."

In doubles, Sandra Burges/Chelsea Horan started things with an 8-2 victory at the second doubles position, then the Islanders clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 from Maider Martin/Mia Matuszak. Nicholls earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, as Isla Brock/Natalia Cardiff defeated Doris Kuselj/Stefania Nicolae 8-4.

All six singles matches were won in decisive fashion. Nicolae knocked off Eva Castiglioni 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, and Burges added a victory by an identical score over Rachel Howie at No. 4. Freshman Celia Rodriguez posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Brock at No. 5, and Horan cruised past Emma Pitre 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 for the Islanders. Nicholls earned wins at No. 1 (Marie Aubert def. Kuselj 6-3, 6-2) and No. 2 (Cardiff def. Martin  6-2, 6-2).

The matches represented the final road contests for both teams, as both the men and the women will close out the 2013 regular season at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The teams have enjoyed tremendous support at home, with both teams ranked 10th in the nation in attendance this season. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is one of just five schools to have both its men's and women's programs ranked in the top 10 in attendance nationally.

The women's team returns to the Coastal Bend with a conference matchup against Oral Roberts on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. The men will take on Lamar on April 18 and Texas-Pan American on April 20 to close out their conference season.
