Men’s Tennis Earns Neutral Site Sweep Over Oral Roberts
DALLAS – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's team, ranked No. 59 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings, earned a sweep of Oral Roberts to improve to 2-0 in Southland Conference play, taking a 7-0 final on Sunday afternoon at a neutral site in Dallas.
Although technically a neutral match, the team had a decidedly partisan crowd on hand, with the crowd being comprised of Islander donors in The Metroplex.
"We're very grateful to our friends in Dallas who allow us to use the top-notch facility at Seay Tennis Center," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We are also grateful to the Islander donor base in Dallas that comes out to support us for our matches."
The Islanders (11-7, 2-0 Southland) won each match over Oral Roberts (2-12, 0-3 Southland), sweeping both doubles and singles as they earned their second league win at a neutral site in the past five days.
"I feel like this team has a real sense of mission to win this conference," said Moore. "But that happens one day at a time, one point at a time. I love how motivated these guys are, our goal is to play each current point with intensity, not 8-of-10 or 9-of-10. I've never seen that done perfectly, but these guys gave a very solid effort today."
In doubles action, the newly teamed duo of Matt Westmoreland and Ricardo Mayagoitia started things off with an 8-1 win at the No. 2 position for the early advantage. Peter Nagy and Gergo Weidinger gave their team the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1, and another new duo, Andrew Maingot and Guillaume Rauseo, made it a 3-0 doubles final with their 8-4 final at the No. 3 position.
The Islanders were dominant in singles play, with each player winning in straight sets over their Golden Eagle counterparts.
Nagy picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Weidinger won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles slot. Westmoreland helped out the cause with a 6-1, 6-4 final at No. 3, Mayagoitia won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Javier Pujol also earned a 6-0, 6-0 final at the No. 5 position. Rauseo rounded out the singles portion of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 final at No. 6 to help his team to the sweep.
"Overall, I thought we did a very solid job of controlling the things we can control and playing with great energy and footwork," said Moore. "I thought the guys played a smart match today."
Next up for the Islanders will be a non-conference matchup against Louisiana – Lafayette on April 5, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The two teams met earlier in the season, with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi earning a tough 4-2 win over the Ragin' Cajuns to advance to the finals of the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions. The team would go on to win the tournament for the first time in school history.
