Men’s Tennis Win Over ULL Sends Team to HEB Tournament of Champions Final

CORPUS CHRISTI – Coming off of a 4-1 win over No. 30 BYU earlier in the day, the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team earned a gritty 4-2 win against Louisiana – Lafayette in a match that featured three singles matches reach a third set to reach the finals of the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions. The finals will be held at 12 p.m. on the courts at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, with the Islanders facing No. 34 Middle Tennessee for the tournament championship.

The Islanders (3-5) used solid efforts from the top of the lineup, getting wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to take an early 3-0 lead. ULL (6-6) rallied with wins at No. 4 and 5 to make it close, but Ricardo Mayagoitia closed it out with a third-set win at No. 6 to send his team to the finals.

Being the second match of the day, the teams played singles first and would only go to doubles if necessary. Gergo Weidinger started the run for the Islanders, earning a 6-2, 6-2 final at No. 3 for the early lead. Peter Nagy followed quickly with a 6-1, 6-3 final at No. 1 to put his team two points away.

After Matt Westmoreland earned a 6-4, 6-1 final at No. 2 singles to put Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on the brink of clinching, things got tight as Javier Pujol lost a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 match at No. 5 after cramping during the match. Guillaume Rauseo fell in a third-set tiebreak by a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) final to make it 3-2, but Mayagoitia came through with the big win by taking his third set, notching the 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 final to clinch the win for the Islanders.

The win setup the finals matchup between two teams that played a year ago in the HEB Tournament of Champions, with the Islanders winning a 4-1 contest against the Blue Raiders in the opening round of the tournament. It is a much-improved MTSU team however, with the team reaching No. 34 in the ITA National Rankings in the latest poll released this past Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the Islanders played their most complete match of the season, earning a 4-1 win over No. 30 BYU, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, in the first round. The win was highlighted by Nagy win over the No. 47 singles player in the nation at No. 1 singles.
