47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions Starts Friday
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis program will host one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the nation starting on Friday when the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions kicks off at 9 a.m. on the courts at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. It is the longest running college team tournament in the United States.
The generous donations of HEB and several Islanders boosters have allowed the event to become one of the premier tournaments in the world of college tennis. In addition to monetary support, several families throughout the Corpus Christi tennis community have provided housing for teams during their stay in the Coastal Bend.
In an annual event that the Islanders have faired well in, they will face No. 30 BYU in the 9 a.m. match, with a match against either Louisiana – Lafayette or Western Michigan on tap at 4 p.m.
On the opposite side of the bracket, No. 34 Middle Tennessee and DePaul will do battle at the HEB Tennis Center in the 9 a.m. match, as will South Alabama and UTSA.
For Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (1-5), the team will face one of the toughest opponents in the field, with BYU (10-2) notching wins over four ranked teams, and the only losses coming against No. 3 UCLA and No. 18 Stanford.
It is a familiar field for the Islanders, with just two teams different from a season ago.
After the completion of the early matches on Friday morning, the winner and loser of each match will face their counterpart in a 4 p.m. match at the same sites from the morning.
On Saturday, six of the teams will play for spots 3-8 at 9 a.m., while the 12 p.m. championship match will take place at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. All Islanders matches will be played at the Henry Tennis Center on the Momentum Campus off of Nile Dr.
