ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team finished a long road trip in New Mexico on Monday evening, falling 7-0 to the No. 61 New Mexico Lobos at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
The Islanders (0-2) head home for a few days before taking to the road once again in their next match at TCU on Jan. 30 in Fort Worth. The Lobos (1-0) won their season opener against the Islanders in the sweep.
"We lost to a very good team tonight," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I thought we competed very hard and played very well in the doubles, but they are really rough at home indoor in altitude. They were just a better team tonight."
In early doubles action, Peter Nagy and Odon Barta earned an 8-6 final at No. 1 to give the Islanders a win, but Pietro Jordao and Matt Westmoreland lost 8-5 at No. 2 while Andrew Maingot and Gergo Weidinger fell 8-0 in the No. 3 match.
In singles action, Weidinger lost a nail biter at 10-8 in the third-set tiebreak to fall by a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 3 position. Nagy lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1; Westmoreland lost a hotly contested match by a 7-5, 6-3 final in the No. 2 position, Barta lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, Guillaume Rauseo suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback at No. 5 singles and Jordao could not earn a win at No. 6 singles, falling by a 7-5, 6-2 mark at No. 6 singles.
"We have a lot of work to do, and a lot of improvement to make," said Moore. "We will start working extremely hard on those things as soon as we get home. I like the character and the fight of our guys, they fought until the end just like they always do, and I'm incredibly optimistic about what this season holds for us. We learned some crucial things this weekend about how we need to play to beat the top nationally ranked teams, and I think it will be very beneficial to our team over the long haul."
After the opening trek across Texas to New Mexico, things do not get any easier for the Islanders when they travel to TCU at the end of the month. It will be another tough test for the team early on in the season after two tough losses over the weekend.
"Give New Mexico credit," said Moore. "They're always a very well coached team that competes very hard, and I feel their team this year is an especially talented group.
"We're going to be playing tough nationally ranked teams like this all season long, so we have to improve and find a way to scrap and claw out these matches because it will not get any easier."
