The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team will start the year the same way it has the past five years, taking to the road for a series of season-opening matches in the state of New Mexico. On Saturday, the Islanders will take on New Mexico State in Las Cruces and close out the trip against New Mexico on Monday evening in Albuquerque.
The 2013 team will feature a 50/50 split, with five newcomers joining the five returning players as the team tries to defend the 2012 Southland Conference Championship, the fifth straight title for the Islanders.
Sophomore Peter Nagy returns to lead the way for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, having won two fall tournaments, the Islanders Open and the Rice Galleria Fall Invite, and reaching the quarterfinals of the top flight at the ITA Texas Regionals. Seniors Andrew Maingot and Gergo Weidinger join Nagy, with junior Matt Westmoreland and sophomore Pietro Jordan rounding out the returning Islanders.
A year ago in Las Cruces, the Islanders earned a dramatic 4-3 victory over the No. 53 NMSU Cowboys to open the year. Westmoreland rallied from down 0-4 in the third and final set to take a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 final to clinch the match. Nagy won at No. 1 singles in the first collegiate match of his career.
The team will face NMSU at 2 p.m. CST on Saturday, with a 5 p.m. match on Monday against UNM. Following the long trek across Texas to New Mexico, the Islanders will have a closer affair on Jan. 30 against TCU in Fort Worth.
