Peter Nagy Wins Rice Galleria Fall Invitational For Islanders Tennis

HOUSTON – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis player Peter Nagy continued his hot streak in fall play on Sunday, taking home the crown at the Rice Galleria Fall Invitational in the men's flight A singles bracket.

Nagy is now 7-0 in singles this fall, and picked up the last three with wins over a player from host Rice and the top two players from Tulane. After defeating Tulane's No. 1 player, Idan Mark, 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday, Nagy dispatched Joe Young, the No. 2 player from Tulane, in the finals by a 6-1, 6-2 final to clinch the title.

"We're very proud of Peter for the level he played this weekend, and even more importantly, the focus and maturity he showed," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "He beat some very good players this weekend."

The Flight A bracket that Nagy came out on top of featured top players from host Rice, Texas Tech, Tulane, New Mexico and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

"It's amazing the correlation between extreme hard work and confidence," said Moore. "Peter is extremely confident because he worked so hard over the summer and is working so hard in practice. He's upgraded so many areas of his game, and that allowed him to play well both on a fast indoor court and on a slow windy outdoor court on the same day."

It was the second Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)-sanctioned tournament that Nagy has won, and it was not an easy task for the players in the event. Friday and Saturday both featured bouts with rain showers that forced play indoors after starting the day outside.

"What he has improved the most though is his mental game, and his ability to stay in the present and play each point with intensity," said Moore. "If he continues this type of focus and work ethic, this could be an incredible year for him and our team. He's really a special guy, and he possesses a lot of those attributes you really appreciate as a coach."

In addition to Nagy, the rest of the Islanders team competed well at the tournament.

Javier Pujol won matches over players from Texas Tech and Tulane in the back draw of Flight C, Matt Westmoreland beat Peter Frank of Rice on Sunday at the tourney, Daniel Erbacher won over Dylan Tozier of Rice on Sunday and Andrew Maingot also beat Tozier on the final day.

Guillaume Rauseo and Odon Barta both advanced to the finals of the back draw in Flight B singles bracket before the match was cancelled due to the weather.

In all, the team won 11 singles matches and four doubles matches at the tournament.

"I thought our team as a whole competed very well at this tournament," said Moore. "This is such a top-notch event and Rice does such an incredible job hosting it. We were very grateful to participate in this tournament.

"This team is working hard and getting better every week. We have to keep working with an extreme work ethic on the right things, one day at a time, and keep making the choice to be high-character teammates."

Next up for the men's tennis team will be the ITA Texas Regionals at TCU on Oct. 20 in Fort Worth.
