This past weekend, the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tennis teams and top local players got together for an exciting tennis event as the Islanders played host to the Mercedes-Benz Dealer Championships at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Local players competed Saturday for a chance to win a trip to Hawaii and take part in the Western Sectional Championships of the tournament, as Robert Webster and Alexandra Dyckman won their respective groups to earn the trip to Hawaii on behalf of Mercedes-Benz.
The two players will go to Hawaii and compete against other sectional winners for the chance to win a Mercedes-Benz VIP package to the 2013 US Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Ed Hicks Mercedes-Benz and owner Charlie Hicks chose to host the event at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center alongside the Islanders Tennis program and the organizations raised over $6,000 for the tennis squads.
It was a tremendously beneficial fundraiser for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tennis teams, and will be used for the teams' most important necessities such as travel, rackets, string, shoes and other items.
"I would like to once again thank Mr. Charlie Hicks, Mercedes-Benz, Gerry Maingot and our Islanders Athletic Department staff," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I would also like to thank all the participants whose generosity made this such a special event for the Islanders and the Corpus Christi tennis community."
