Top Moment #8: Men's Tennis Wins Tight Match Over Cowboys in HEB Tournament
Since 1966, Corpus Christi has always been home to the HEB Tournament of Champions. This year, the Islanders men's tennis program finished 3rd in the tournament after a hard-earned victory over Oklahoma State.
The match started a bit shaky as Oklahoma State took the doubles point defeating the number two doubles 9-7, and the number one spot 8-5.
Alex Pavlov defeated Cowboy Adolfo Aires by default at No. 6 singles, putting one point on the board for the Islanders.
The Islanders were down 3-1 and the win at the number four spot pushed it to a 3-2 match.
Pietro Jordao kept the momentum going for the Islanders as he defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-3. Things were starting to look up as the Islanders needed only one more point to win the match.
It came down to Aurelien Tave and Chris Haworth at the number two spot. Tave took the first set in tiebreak, 7-6, to earn a 1-0 lead. But in the second set, Haworth bounced back to take a 3-1 lead heading to his serve. Tave earned a crucial break to trim it to 3-2, then pushed it to 3-3 with a win at his serve. Haworth got a game on serve to make it 4-3, then Tave took the next two games to go to the serve up 5-4. The senior then finished off Haworth with an ace to give the Islanders the victory.
"The courage and guts Aurelien showed were unbelievable. He rose up so big when we needed him," Moore said. "But to be honest, he has always done that. A pure fighter with the biggest heart ever – that's Aurelien."
This win marks the third time that the Islanders have beaten a Big 12 team over the last four years (Nebraska, Texas Tech, OSU).
