Islanders Tennis’ Nathan Robinson, Mia Matuszak Named Southland All-Academic

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis player Nathan Robinson was named to the Southland All-Academic First Team on Wednesday, while Mia Matuszak was named second team on the women's tennis All-Academic Teams.

Robinson, a senior from Abilene, was an automatic selection on the first team due to his selection to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team in District 7 of the CoSIDA balloting. He held a 3.96 GPA while double majoring in finance and economics at the University.

He was a member of the Dean's List each semester at the University, and earned the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship from the Southland Conference, and was recently presented with the honor during the Southland Conference Awards Dinner held in Galveston.

On the court, Robinson was a key component to the Islanders fifth straight Southland Conference Championship. He went 11-7 on the season, and was 3-2 in Southland matches. During his career at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, he was a part of three championship teams, and NCAA appearance and was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2010.

On the women's side, Matuszak was named to the second team after being a key part of the Islanders best season ever, including its first win in the Southland Conference Tournament. She finished the year with a 12-5 mark in singles, despite playing the last month of the season with a hurt ankle.

It was on that ankle that she rallied from a set down to take a three-set victory at the No. 6 singles position against Northwestern State in the Southland Tournament. She initially injured her ankle against Texas State, but gritted out a tough three-set match in that contest as well to give the Islanders an important Southland Conference win.

Academically, she holds a 3.57 GPA in mechanical engineering despite the heavy travel involved with the tennis teams in the spring semester. She is a junior for the Islanders, and will be a big part of a team that will return all but one player from its best season ever.
