The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's tennis team will play the first Southland Conference match of the year on Wednesday, traveling to Arlington to face the UT Arlington Mavericks. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Islanders sit at 7-9 overall on the year, but have yet to play a Southland Conference match. The team was scheduled to play Nicholls earlier in the month, but weather forced the rescheduling of the contest to April 18 in Houston. UT Arlington is currently 10-9 overall, with a 1-2 mark in league play.
The match on Wednesday will begin the quest for a fifth-straight Southland Conference Championship in the regular season. Last year, the Islanders went 5-0 in the regular season to claim the title.
The team also won the Southland Conference Tournament, and along with it, a berth in the NCAA Championships. The Islanders have made the NCAA Tournament each time they have been eligible for postseason play in the last four years.
It will be a tall task this season, as the competition in the league is at the highest level since Director of Tennis Steve Moore has returned to coach on the Island. In addition to the Islanders, both Nicholls and UTSA have been ranked this season in the ITA Tennis national rankings.
The last time the two teams met in 2011, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi claimed a 5-2 victory over the Mavericks in Corpus Christi.
