Islanders Tripped Up by Ragin’ Cajuns on the Road

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's tennis team suffered a setback on Thursday afternoon, falling by a 4-0 score to the Louisiana – Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Cajun Courts on the ULL campus.

The Islanders are now 4-6 on the year after the loss, while ULL improved to 3-2 on the year. The team has gone 29-1 in regular season and tournament play over the last four years in the Southland Conference, but are rebuilding after losing last year's top two players, Laurent Montoisy and James Langford.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was also without the services of Matt Westmoreland, the reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and one of the winningest players on the team. He was unable to play for the third singles match in a row due to injury, along with freshman Pietro Jordao missing the match due to injury as well.

"Give credit to Lafayette, they were the tougher team today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I never believe injuries are an excuse, I expect the other guys to rise up and grind out wins. If you play the card of injuries, you develop a culture of softness. It's not about injuries; it's about rising up when it's your turn."

The two teams agreed to play singles first due to the threat of rain, with the match being stopped once either team clinched their fourth point.

Freshman Fernando Llorens fell in a 6-0, 6-1 final at No. 4 for the Cajuns first point of the match, while fellow freshman Peter Nagy lost a 6-1, 6-1 match at the No. 1 position. Gergo Weidinger suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback at No. 3, while Alex Pavlov battled before falling 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match.

The two teams agreed to play singles first due to the threat of rain, with the match being stopped once either team clinched their fourth point.

"This team is young and needs to get a little tougher, and that will be our focus this upcoming week," said Moore." That is what we must teach them as coaches. Again, give credit to Lafayette today, they played the better match."

Next up for the Islanders will be a doubleheader with the women's team on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Both the men's and women's teams will play the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a match starting at 2 p.m. on the Islanders home court.
