Islanders men's tennis evens record with dominating win over Utah State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team bounced back from a season-opening loss to take a dominating 7-0 win over Utah State in the second match of the year. It was the second day in-a-row that the team played an opponent from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

"I thought we showed good character to come back after yesterday and play as hard as we did today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We played with tremendous tenacity from the very beginning."

The Islanders are now 1-1 while Utah State falls to 0-2 early in the season. In singles action, all six Texas A&M - Corpus Christi players won while also taking two-of-three in doubles, sweeping all seven points in the match.

The Islanders started the match off by taking No. 1 doubles as Laurent Montoisy and James Langford won an 8-4 match over Sven Poslusny and Bryan Marchant. In the No. 2 position, Robert Raguz and Nathan Robinson used an identical 8-4 score over Lenny Whiting and Fredrik Peterson to clinch the doubles point for their team. No. 3 doubles saw Alex Pavlov and Gergo Weidinger drop a hard-fought 8-6 match to Jakob Asplund and Nikita Ryashchenko.

"I thought James and Laurent led very well by example," said Moore. "Robert and Nathan got us off to a fast start in doubles, which we needed, by playing very tough and focused.

"These guys have a lot of pride and wanted to win very badly today. I was also very proud of Gergo Weidinger and Matt Westmoreland, who both got off to slow starts, but kept grinding and fighting until they found a way."

In singles action, Montoisy picked up a straight-set win by a 6-2, 6-4 score over Poslusny in No. 1 singles. Aurelien Tave also picked up a two-set win, taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Peterson in the No. 3 singles position. Raguz rounded out the trio of Islanders to win in straight-sets with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Marchant at the No. 4 spot.

The No. 2 singles match saw Langford grit out a three-set win, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, over Asplund. Matt Westmoreland won his second college match in as many days, with the true freshman taking a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win over Ryashchenko in No. 6 singles. The closest match of the night featured Weidinger rallying to defeat Alex Thatcher by a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 final in No. 5 singles.

"Yesterday's match was so close and really came down to a few points in a few matches," said Moore. "Today was much the same; we could have won yesterday 4-3 just as easily as we could have lost today by a 4-3 score.

"The heart and tenacity with this team is a given, but the difference between yesterday and today is we played a little smarter and with a little more freedom at key moments. Playing in this altitude makes it quite a chess match, and you've got to make the right moves."

Next up for the Islanders will be a 5 p.m. match tomorrow, January 22 in Albuquerque, N.M. against DePaul. They will round out their four-game road trip against New Mexico on Monday, January 24 at 5 p.m. before finally heading home.

"I know that DePaul is very tough," said Moore. "They added a transfer who played No. 1 at Wichita State and also a starting lineup player from Oklahoma so we have another tough battle tomorrow.

"We've just got to do a very good job of playing one quality point at a time, staying in the present and of those couple of things we can control."
