Edinburg - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis teams split a pair of matches on Wednesday with the women beating the Broncs by a 4-2 margin in a non-conference match against Texas-Pan American. while the men's team had its 17-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 loss. It is the first regular-season Southland Conference loss since 2006 when Director of Tennis Steve Moore returned to the program.

"I'm incredibly proud of how hard the girls fought, today was windy with tough conditions and the girls were extremely mentally tough," said Moore. "They really did a good job today controlling the things they could control and not losing focus on things they can't control like the wind or the crowd.

"That's the way the sport is supposed to be played and they did a great job of it today."

The women improve to 8-9 on the season while the men fall to 7-13 overall and 1-1 in Southland matches. Moore's overall record against Southland Conference teams in his two tenures as the men's coach is 32-6 with the last two losses coming this year, the Islanders NCAA probation year, against UTPA. The record is over two periods as Moore was the head coach from 1998-2000 and then returned to his current position as Director of Tennis in 2006.

In the women's action, Mirna Cicak won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Doris Kuselj won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, Bianca Discordia won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and LeAnne Mascall won 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Nadia Filmalter lost her match 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles while Adrienne Kovacs had to retire from her match due to an injury. The teams did not play doubles to allow for the men's match to start.

"The girls were exceptional and I think we'll be ready to carry that confidence into Friday's match against McNeese," said Moore. "Having Mirna healthy makes a huge difference for us, she played incredibly well today as did Doris, Bianca and LeAnne."

In a hotly contested Southland Conference race, there are five teams with three wins at positions 5-10 in the conference with McNeese and TAMUCC being two of them. The Islanders and the Cowgirls play a 10:30 AM match at the Corpus Christi Country Club on Friday.

On the men's side, the Islanders struggled while playing the Broncs on their home court and were only able to claim one point in their first Southland Conference loss in some time.

"Today we didn't do a very good job today of upholding the tradition that's been built the last three years," said Moore. "I give credit to Pan American, this is perhaps the best team they've ever had and they were very good today at home.

"But at the same time, I'm disappointed to see the streak end this way."

In doubles, Dmitry Novikov and James Langford once again won their match, winning a tough 8-7 (10-5) battle at the No. 1 position. Robert Raguz and Alex Pavlov lost 8-3 at the No. 2 position while Andrew Maingot and Nathan Robinson lost 9-7 at the No. 3 spot to give UTPA the doubles point.

In singles action, the only Islander victory was a 6-4, 6-4 win by Robinson at the No. 5 position. Novikov lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Langford fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 and Raguz lost in three sets by a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 final at No. 3 singles. Pavlov also lost in three, going 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Duje Janjic lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.

"This team has been special in these Southland Conference matches for the last three years, we were hard to beat because everyone competed with such exceptional tenacity and maxed out," said Moore. "All six guys in every match for three years competed special but that simply did not happen today.

"We have to compete harder and we will compete harder."
