The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team had an impressive opening day at the Division I ITA South Central Regional Championships. The tournament draw included every division one team in Texas.
Dmitry Novikov won 6-1, 6-1 over Giacomo Sano in the main draw of singles advancing to take on the fifth seed of the tournament on Sunday. He'll face Ed Corrie of Texas in the next round.
"Very good day of tennis today for us and tomorrow we'll need to keep that focus that we had today in the matches tomorrow," said director of tennis Steve Moore "I'm so proud of Dmitry and the respect that the region showed him by how they seeded him in this tournament," added Moore.
The duo of Andrew Maingot and Nathan Robinson won two matches in the main draw of doubles. Maingot and Robinson won 8-2 in their first match and 8-4 later in the day, advancing to the round of 16.
"I'm extremely proud of how our doubles played today, it really shows how hard they are playing and improving," said Moore on Maingot and Robinson who were paired for the first time heading into this tournament.
Alex Pavlov was able to advance to the second round of the consolation bracket.
James Langford had to withdraw due to an injury. "Disappointed for James but at this early in the season you don't push an injury like that," said Moore.
