CORPUS CHRISTI – Redshirt sophomore Jake Kocher of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been named Second Team Southland Conference All-Academic the league announced today. Kocher is the third player in program history to pick up all-academic honors and the second in Willis Wilson's three years at the helm of the program.
"When we look at our core principles of character, toughness and talent, Jake Kocher is a guy who fits that mold," Wilson said. "His hard work on the court and in the classroom embodies what we are looking for from our student-athletes. I know Jake is a true student-athlete, and I'm happy that he accomplished this achievement."
Kocher, who holds a 3.49 cumulative GPA in marketing, has been a standout for his efforts off the court since arriving at the Island University. He was one of 75 Division I finalist for the NABC/Allstate Good Works Team for his community service and academic efforts this season. He has represented the university at numerous outreach activities, particularly with the youth of Corpus Christi, and traveled to the NCAA APPLE Conference last year to represent the Islanders.
On the court, he was one of the toughest players in the Southland Conference this year, coming back from surgery on both of his hips to play in 32 of the Islanders' 35 games. He came off the bench in all but three of those but posted 5.7 points and 2.5 rebounds in his 17.2 minutes of action. Kocher also finished fourth in the league with his 1.9 steals in conference affairs.
Kocher and the Islanders posted their finest season in the Wilson era, going 18-16 overall and 14-4 in conference play to finish second in the league. A&M-Corpus Christi finished with 13 more wins than a season ago, the third-best improvement in the nation. With nine more league wins than the 2012-13 campaign, it represented the biggest in-conference turnaround in college basketball.
