CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior guard John Jordan of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been named Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today. Jordan averaged 16.0 points and 8.5 assists in leading the Islanders to a pair of victories.
It marked the first career weekly honor for Jordan, who was a First Team Preseason All-Southland selection prior to the 2013-14 campaign. Jordan also picked up Southland Player of the Week honors from College Sports Madness. He is the first Islanders player to earn weekly honors from the league this year.
Jordan started the week with a solid performance in the Islanders' win over Central Arkansas, going for 10 points on 3-for-7 shooting. He was tremendous in his distribution, doling out eight assists to just two turnovers, and adding three steals and four rebounds in 34 minutes.
But in the victory over Oral Roberts, the Houston native took the game over down the stretch. He posted 22 points and nine assists in a career-high 41 minutes of action. In the game's final 12:45, he scored or assisted on 25 of the final 26 Islanders points to lift the home squad to a season sweep of ORU. His jumper with seven seconds to play in regulation tied the score and sent the game to overtime, where the Islanders prevailed, 74-72.
The junior has already entered the school's all-time top 10 in points, assists, rebounds, free throws made, free throws attempted and steals in his third campaign in an Islanders uniform. He is on pace to become the all-time assist leader early next season, holding the top three single-season assists performances in school history. He needs just 23 assists the remainder of this season in order to top his school record of 159, set last season. He is also just 31 points away from becoming the school's ninth 1,000-point scorer.
Jordan and the Islanders are off the court until Saturday, when they travel to Houston for a matchup against Houston Baptist, the first meeting between the two programs in Islanders history. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Sharp Gym. Yannis Koutroupis will have the call starting at 7:10 with the pregame show on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX.
