Lewis Leads UTSA Past Men's Basketball, 87-76

SAN ANTONIO – Keon Lewis scored a career-high 30 points to lead a hot-shooting UTSA squad to an 87-76 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team on Saturday at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners hit nine of their first 13 shots from beyond the arc and shot 24-for-39 (.615) overall from the floor in the contest.

Lewis was joined in the scoring column by Jordan Sims, who hit five threes en route to 15 points. The Runners won the battle of the boards, 34-16. The Islanders were led by Hameed Ali, who netted a career-high 21 points, while Jelani Currie (career-high 15) and Jake Kocher (11) also finished in double figures.

UTSA came out firing, hitting four of their first five shots to open up an early 10-2 lead. The home squad continued its offensive efficiency, pushing the lead to 23-10, having hit 9-of-12 shots with offensive rebounds on all three of its misses. But the Islanders were able to counter, with a 10-3 run to cut the lead to just six at 26-20, culminating in a three-point play by Kocher.

UTSA, though, still had its hot hand from the outside. The runners nailed back-to-back triples, sandwiched around a John Jordan floater, to get the lead back to 32-22. From there, the lead fluctuated from 7-11, but UTSA closed the half with four straight free throws for Lewis to head to the locker room up 40-28.

Out of the locker room, though, the Roadrunners were able to extend the lead with a 13-2 run, pushing the advantage to 53-30. The combination of Islanders turnovers and UTSA hot shooting was capped off by a three-point play for Lewis to push the lead to 23.

The Islanders began to chip away slowly, though, cutting the lead to 13 on a Brandon Pye three that made it 59-46 at the 9:20 mark. But that was as close as the visitors would come until the final minute, as the Roadrunners were able to hit their shots at the line (23-for-30 in the second half) to finish off an 87-76 victory.

The Islanders will return to the Coastal Bend for a Tuesday night contest against Central Michigan. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the American Bank Center. For tickets, call 825-BALL (2255) or visit GoIslanders.com.
