Jordan Named Preseason First Team All-Southland
CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior guard John Jordan of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been named Preseason First Team All-Southland Conference, it was announced today. Jordan finished second in the league with 5.5 assists per game and 13th with 12.8 points per game a year ago.
"I don't think it's any secret to our fans how highly we think of John and his ability," head coach Willis Wilson said, "but to have him recognized by the coaches within the league is a great honor. If what we're seeing in the preseason translates over to the regular season, it's going to be a great season for him. He's just a special basketball player."
Jordan broke his own school record with 159 assists on the season, besting his record mark last year by 21. He averaged 12.8 points per game, 12th in the Southland, and also grabbed 4.8 rebounds per game, second on the Islanders. Only three players in the nation had better numbers than Jordan in points, rebounds and assists.
The Houston native had three double-doubles, matching the school record with 11 assists in a double-double at Lamar, and adding double-doubles with rebounds and points against Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State. He had a career-high 24 points at Southeastern. He also set a school record with his 1,060 minutes played on the season.
Through just two seasons, he is on the verge of making his mark in the career record book as well. He is only 196 assists away from Brian Evans' career mark of 493 and will move into the top two with his 54th assist this season. He is also on pace to enter the Islanders' top 10 in minutes, points, field goals made, free throws made, rebounds and steals in 2013-14.
The Preseason All-Southland Teams are voted on by the conference's 14 head coaches. The Southland preseason polls will be published next week.
